The More Barn, the iconic structure that is the subject of some of the most famous photos of Steamboat
Springs, will get a boost this summer from a Rocky Mountain Youth Corps crew.
A new partnership between RMYC and Historic Routt County will result in a four-person team, ages 17 to 21, that will work with two leaders and a contractor to repair the barn and potentially the collapsing homestead next to it.
Historic Routt County Executive Director Towny Anderson said the program could be a training ground for people who would like to go into historic preservation later in life.
“It actually came out of the (Colorado Mountain College) historic preservation program,” Anderson said. “How do we introduce kids to historic preservation and hopefully encourage them to get further education in historic preservation. The concept was instead of taking a youth corps out into the wilderness and building trails, why not put them on an historic site?”
In cooperation with the city of Steamboat Springs and the developer of the Barn Village subdivision where the More Barn is located, the RMYC crew will work for eight weeks, from June 14 to Aug. 6, on the barn and surrounding buildings. The workers will fill gaps in the barn walls, stabilize a nearby building, document everything and possibly disassemble the homestead on the site and put the logs into storage.
