Combs Grave Site

The information we have on the Combs family was received from Mrs. Beulah Harms. She received information on the Combs family from Daryl Combs of San Pedro, CA. From his research we glean the following history. Our subject, Michael Combs, was a descendant from Thomas Combs of Muhlenberg, KY. Thomas was born 1760 ca and married 23 Dec. 1793 in Nelson County, KY to Sarah (Susan) Anderson. They had seven children, one of which was David, born 9 Feb. 1802. David married 1 April 1823 in Muhlenberg County, KY to Susannah France, born 1802 in KY or VA (daughter of Michael Frantz and Elizabeth Gish). David died 20 April 1846 and was buried in the Gish Cemetery. David and Susannah had nine children. Of these Michael Combs was born 24 Oct. 1838.

Michael Combs first married 3 Aug. 1861 in Greenville to Elizabeth Shank, born 1837 (daughter of John Shank and Sally Jones). He married second Mary Tatum, born about 1839 in Illinois. Michael died 5 Oct. 1906 in Steamboat Springs, CO. He was buried on the old homestead. In an article printed in the Steamboat Pilot, June 16, 1966, it shows a picture of Mike Combs, from the early 1900's. It talks about the fact that Mike prepared the barbecued meat of elk, deer, antelope, bear and chicken for the annual celebration that lasted for three days. In another article that talked about Beverly Marlow doing family research on the Combs family, it states that "the Combs family lived on the River Road and the father and one infant were buried on a knoll on the west side of the road on what was later the Charles Barnes property.

From the land records we see that Michael Combs got a homestead exemption on 160 acres on Sept. 26, 1903. He received a patent on April 7, 1906. There appears to be a transaction on April 20, 1906 from Combs to an Elenor Chone. Then in 1909 there is another transaction from Combs to several people, including a Combs and Brumback. On May 6, 1910 E. "Coyne" transferred her interest to the Sunny Slope Strawberry Co. Following transactions include Anderson to Anderson, Anderson to Barton, First National Bank to John Page and Page to Pauline Barnes. The last recorded transaction is from Barnes to Betty Kuntz, personal representative for Pauline Barnes.

This site is in very poor shape. All that remains are the four corner posts and a few strands of wire. It is totally overgrown with sage brush and almost lost.
