Hanna Grave Site

This is the grave site of William H. Hanna. Little is known of Hanna at this time. It is reported that he came to this area to trap in the Sunnyside Creek area. Local stories say that he came here from Leadville, CO. One of the colorful stories is that he had his nose bitten off in a fight at a saloon in Leadville.

Some work has been done at this site in the past few years. A new log fence has been erected and a wooden marker was placed on the fence with his name and dates. The wooden marker says W. H. "Hanner". We believe that this is in fact Wm. H. Hanna, based on the land records. It also states that he died in 1911, another source states that he died in 1910. He was referred to as "Trapper" Hanna.

Land records show that a "Joseph" Hanna received a homestead exemption for 160 acres on Jan. 2, 1913 for this site. It shows that Joseph sold the land to Wm. F. Evans on Nov. 6, 1913. On Nov. 12, 1913 Evans sold the land to Frank Benton Land & Livestock Co. The patent on this site was not recorded in the court house until Sept. 12, 1990. It is a patent from the US Government to "the heirs of William Hanna" dated June 1951 signed by President W. Wilson. The last transaction is from Benton to the Nottingham Investment Co., dated Jan. 22, 1993.
