OTHG Hikes 2011        

There are two OTHG hiking groups planned for this summer: 
     1) Monday Hikes - the traditional hikes that the Gang has been doing for years, and
     2) Mellow Hikes - a slower paced group which will stop to smell the roses on the way.

Everyone is welcome in both groups — bring your guests too, and of course, bring your dogs!  Remember though, that people from other parts of the country often have trouble with the elevation.

Hikers should be prepared with a packed lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen and bug repellent. It is also advisable to purchase a Colorado Search and Rescue Card. This is available from several sources, including the U.S. Forest Service office.

     

Monday Hikes
There are many opportunities to hike in and around Steamboat.  There is a more or less formal set of hikes that take place on Monday morning.  Everyone is welcome—bring your guests too; and, of course, bring your dog!  Remember that people from other parts of the country often have trouble with the elevation.  Many of these hikes offer good turn-around places, so you don’t have to do the full hike.

The following list is tentative and may change depending on the weather, desires of hikers, etc.  This year the schedule might need to be adjusted due to persistent snow and high flowing streams.  Erica Lindemann will send out an e-mail to those on her list notifying them of changes to the schedule, but she will NOT send out weekly reminders.  If you want to be on the e-mail list for Monday hikes, send a note to Erica at ericatlindemann@hotmail.com.  Note that there is no hike scheduled for July 4 because it is a holiday.  Be sure to bring a lunch and plenty of water. You do not have to sign up—just appear at the Safeway parking lot before the designated departure time.    (Don’t be late, because the group leaves promptly.)

          Mellow Hikes (formerly know as Slow Hikes)
In 2009,a new group formed called the Slow Hikers and they plan to hike again this summer.  This will be a less formal set of hikes (specific hikes have not NOT been pre-determined).  Hikers will be asked to suggest and plan hikes.

This group plans to do challenging hikes, but at a slower pace than the Monday group - they “stop to smell the roses”.  Distances and vertical gained will be usually be somewhat less than the Monday Hikes.  Last year’s Slow Hikes included some rather adventurous off-trail bushwhacking.   Bring plenty of water, lunch and sun screen.

Where: Meet at the north-west corner of the Safeway parking lot (near Rte 40).
