Term of Service
Start Date: August 17th, 2009
- End Date: Late May or early June depending on school placement
- Average work week: 43 hours
- Complete 1,700 hours of community service
Expectations
September-October: Orientation & Yampa Valley Science School
- Successfully complete a week long comprehensive orientation
- Plan and implement an education block for the duration of Yampa Valley Science School
- Assist and guide the Junior Leaders from the high schools for the duration of Yampa Valley Science School
October-June: In-school Placement
- Maintain a case load of 6-8 target students
- Complete, at minimum, one hour of direct contact with each target student per week
- Provide case load with social-emotional and educational support throughout term of service
- Maintain case notes on each target student
- Plan & implement all aspects of one weekly after-school program
- Run all aspects of the school's Green Team Environmental Club
- Assist Partners in Routt County with any grant related data collection and evaluation
- Plan and run all aspects of National & Global Youth Service Day Project
- Attend and complete all Friday professional development sessions and meetings
- Participate in school, PRC, City of Steamboat Springs and community functions as requested
- Complete all hours, training and service logs on a regular basis
May-June: Wrap-up
- Complete a portfolio highlighting your School-Based Mentor experience
- Attend the Life After AmeriCorps Retreat
School Placement Sites
Determined by PRC staff after orientation: dependant on mentor's personality & work style.
Hayden Middle School
- Located in Hayden, about 20 miles west of Steamboat Springs
- Hayden has agricultural roots
- Smaller school, about 120 students in 6th-8th grades
Steamboat Springs Middle School
- Located in Steamboat Springs; Partners hub is also located in Steamboat
- Steamboat is a resort town with a ranching background
- Medium sized school, around 175 children per grade in 6th-8th
Soroco Middle School
- Located in Oak Creek, 20 miles southeast of Steamboat
- Oak Creek has mining roots
- Small school, around 80 students in 7th-8th grades only
