Hayden, Colorado is a tiny rural community (pop. approx. 2000) in the northwestern region of the state. As in many communities, there are usually senior citizens living alone in their homes.
Many of these seniors are unable to care for themselves in the proper manner but are reluctant to move out of their environment, whether that be to a nursing home or out of the community to live with children or relatives. In 1992, a group of women met with a local doctor to address this problem. The group arrived at the idea of building an assisted living residence for seniors where their living accommodations would be monitored and safe, where medications would be given as prescribed, where companionship would be available, and where proper nutrition would be provided.
Many hours were spent studying the need for such a residence, and the idea was presented to the senior citizens of the Yampa Valley. The idea gleaned great enthusiasm and support from seniors, their families, and from the community as a whole.
A building campaign was begun, and many donations and grants were received for the 1.5 million-dollar project. In the fall of 1995, a 9,700 square foot residence was built on land donated by Peabody Coal Company. The Haven opened in July of 1996.
The Haven employs 15 full and part-time staff and can house 20 residents.
Mission: Provide Senior Assisted Living for seniors over 55 years of age who do not require skilled nursing care, but who no longer can, or want, to live alone.

The Haven won the 1999 "Best Practices in Medication Award" from the Colorado Department of Health and recently won the El Pomar Award of Excellence in the Senior Category, here are five reasons why...
1. The residents live as a family would, with the same trials and tribulations, but with the same love, caring and sharing that would go on in any extended family.
2. The staff is extremely close to each and every resident. The bonding that occurs between staff and resident is incredible. Staff members go out of their way to accommodate the residents, even when not on duty.
3. Each and every resident has his/her own half bath, even when residing in a "shared" room. Dutch doors on each room allow extent of privacy to be regulated by the individual resident. There is a beauty shop within the facility with a licensed cosmetologist on staff. Residents may take advantage of a well-quipped laundry room or choose to have the staff do their laundry. There is a whirlpool bath with a slide down door (stepping in is not a problem) that enables residents to have complete privacy when bathing.
4. The kitchen staff of The Haven serves three nutritious and delicious meals each day with serious consideration given to dietary needs of the residents and their likes and dislikes. The residents are encouraged to help cook meals or special dishes if they are able to do so with assistance.
5. Community support exhibited toward The Haven residents is heartwarming. Residents take part in parades, dinners, school activities, dances, musical programs, and bingo, among others. Many of these activities are brought into The Haven on an almost daily basis. Residents often receive free tickets to community functions, and invitations more than they want.
