Information on Edward R. Cody is sketchy. He was appointed sheriff and took the Oath of Office on May 5, 1879 to serve until the next general election. According to the 1880 census his occupation was listed as "chiner", (probably residing at Hahn's Peak) age 30 and place of birth given as Illinois. In the 1885 tax roll his occupation is listed as Sup't. of Mines. According to the profile of Henry T. "Hank" Campbell "he (Campbell) met Ed Cody in the Dakota's, whose father owned some placer claims at Hahn's Peak. There was a store at the Peak kept by Cody & Hinman." In a transcript of an interview given by Tom Morgan he said "two of Buffalo Bill Cody's brothers were big men up at Hahn's Peak and they could turn things around any way they chose".
