Mr. Kitchens was born in Clay County, North Carolina. The year of birth is not known for sure but probably in 1876. He came to Steamboat Springs, Routt County about 1893 at the age of 17. He served as Undersheriff for Charles Neiman before being elected to two terms as Sheriff in 1924 and again in 1926. The terms of office being two years each. He and Viva Marvin Kitchens were married in 1922 and had no children. He and his wife also kept tourist cabins in Steamboat Springs for several years. "Bill", as he was known by nearly everyone in Routt County, took his own life on Wednesday, September 28, 1938. He was found by his wife in a shed behind one of the tourist cabins. He was apparently despondent over ill health as he had not been well for several years. Funeral services were held on Friday, September 30, 1938 at the Congregational Church in Hayden and "Bill" Kitchens was buried in Hayden next to a brother.
