Very little is known of Simon Tanner. It was reported that he homesteaded this area and raised cattle. It was also reported that he died when he was 83 years old. According to the 1900 Routt County census, Rock Creek Pct., Simon Tanner was born in Switzerland and emigrated to this country in 1873 arriving in Pennsylvania. He was born April 1846.
From land records we did not find where Simon Tanner received a homestead exemption. It was not until 1930 that a patent was issued to "the heirs of Simon Tanner". This leads us to believe that he died before August of 1930. The patent covered 320 acres including all of the NE 1/4 of section 24 and the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4 and the E 1/2 and of the NW 1/4 of section 24. In 1938 we find a transfer from Dora Cock to Henry Cock. Dora may have been an heir to Simons Estate. In 1957 Henry Cock sold to Henry King and in 1964 Kind sold to Benson & Mildred Wurtsmith.
