The Fairplay Cemetery is also referred to as the Borghi/Jackson grave site and in some cases has been referred to as the Trull Cemetery. Information on this site is very limited. There is one headstone at this site which is for the Borghi daughters. The first daughter, Angelina, reportedly was drowned in the Elk River and the body was never recovered. She died in 1887. The second daughter, Rosa, died in 1897. In an article in the Steamboat Pilot, Oct. 20, 1897 we find information on Rosa. "Death of Rosa Borghi, death in a cruel form has recently visited some of our neighbors at Puma. Rosa Borghi, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Borghi, died in Denver last Thursday night of typhoid fever."
Rosa was returned to her family and was buried on the hill north of the Fairplay school house. The headstone lists both daughters and their dates. There are two foot stones with the names inscribed.
We have received information from several sources that a Jackson child was also buried at this site. We are continuing research to verify this claim. There have also been references that there may have been a fourth grave at this site.
Land records show that this site was homesteaded by a man named Comer. He got a homestead exemption in 1906 and it appears that it was patented in 1909 to his heirs. In 1961 the land was deeded to Kemmer and Wakeland. Wakeland transferred his interest to Kemmer. Kemmer sold to Irwin in 1916 and he held the land until 1943 when he sold it to Clarence Wheeler. C. Wheeler has deeded interest in this land to other members of his family.
The site is located on private property, permission is required for access.
