Fleming Family Cemetery One
Fleming Family Cemetery [Click here to view full size picture] The name Fleming is of English-Scotch origin. The Flemings came from New York state to Colorado about 1861. Charles worked in Denver for the Denver Sewer & Clay Pipe Co. While working in Denver he met and married a girl by the name of Laura Whitman. They decided to try their hand at homesteading so they moved to Columbine and took up a spot on the South Fork of the Little Snake River.

Charlie and Laura had two sons, Harold and Earl. Laura died when she was only 25 and is buried at this site. Charlie worked as a freighter and a cowboy and also at the Royal Flush Mine. It was there that he met his second wife, Sylvia Hummel. They were married and had three children; Leonard, Maxine and Anna May.

The Fleming family was a typical early pioneer family. Their lives were tough but honest. They received pleasure from the more simple things. There was joy in going out to cut a Christmas tree or receiving a small bag of candy from the store when groceries were purchased, which was twice a year. Charlie, in later years bought out Tom Morris, Mr. Burnside, Leon Breeze, Clarence Tyler and son Harold, thus making him a pretty good ranch.

Information on the Fleming family was obtained from a personal history written by Anna May Fleming Adams (Sept. 1974). In her story she states that "there is a small cemetery on the ranch where Charlie's mother, Ruth Anna (Banner) Fleming, step-father Elmer Ellsworth Hartzell, son Earl Edward Fleming and his first wife, Laura May (Whitman) Fleming are all buried." During our survey of this site we found two small enclosures with two graves in each one. Wife Laura and son Earl are in one site and Elmer Hartzell and a Charles Nickerson are in the other. There is not a stone or marker for Charlie's mother, Ruth Anna. Further research on this site has determined that Ruth Ann Fleming is buried at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery. She is listed as Anna Hartzell.

Land records show that Charles M. Fleming received a homestead exemption on 160 acres on Aug. 26, 1910. He did not receive a patent until 1922. In 1932 records show that the land was put into joint tenancy, including Charles and Sylvia. In 1932 Charles also received a patent on additional land in this section. He also took up land in section two. In 1942 it appears that the land went from Fleming to Harold Johnson and then back to Fleming. In 1954 Sylvia sold to the Crown Rock Ranch Co. The land eventually passed through the Spicer Family Trust to Billy D. Howell.
