This is the grave of Jacob Kier who died Sept. 15, 1919. Jacob was the first of the Kier family to settle in Routt County. The land has been passed down from generation to generation. Jacob actually homesteaded land adjoining this site. He had not proved up on the land so when he died he was buried on his sons land adjoining his (Jacob's) homestead. Eventually his son, Walter, proved up on his fathers land. Jacob's land was in T1S R84W. His grave is located on Sec 36, of T1N R84W, just above the base line. The lineage for the Kier line is from Jacob to Walter to Charles and now Larry Kier.
From the land records we find that Walter Kier received a homestead exemption for 240 acres on Oct. 11, 1922. He received his patent on Nov. 17, 1925. On the same dates, Walter received a homestead exemption for 67.4 acres and also received a patent in Nov. 1925. Again on Nov. 17, 1925 there was a patent issued for the heirs of Jacob Kier for 300.89 acres. In 1937 there is a record of a QCD to Delpha J. Kier. Then in 1950 the land was sold to Loi and Charles Kier. In 1972 the land was transferred to Larry and Charlotte Kier, the current owners.
The site is on private property and permission for access is required.
