Boettler Grave Site
The exact location of this grave has not been identified. The grave is that of a child named Lucy Boettler (Butler). She was the daughter of Charles and Effie Boettler. Information for this grave was obtained from a death certificate. From this record we obtained the following: Lucy Boettler was born March 3, 1905, she died March 17, 1905. According to the death certificate Charles Boettler was the informant, he was from Missouri and his wife Effie was from Ohio. Address for Charles and Effie was at Eddy, Colorado. Place of burial was also Eddy. The date of burial was noted as March 18, 1905. Cause of death was premature birth.

There are still Boettlers in Colorado, Ron Boettler lives in Rifle, Colorado. Katherine Boettler Bowman also lives in Arvada, Colorado. From Richard Boettler of Houston, Texas we obtained the following information: David and Maria Boetler were the original immigrant ancestors from Germany. They were the parents of ten children, among them Louis Boettler, born 1833. Louis married Catharine Klinghammer and they lived briefly in St. Charles County, Missouri. They then moved to Chillicothe in Livingston County where they began raising their 13 children. Among their sons were Ben, Levi, Theodore and Charles. The entire family moved to the area near Hennessey, Oklahoma sometime after 1886.

From the land records we find that Theodore Boettler homesteaded land in 1894. This included the N 1/2 of the SW 1/4, the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 and the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 2, T5N R86W. This was for 160 acres. This was patented to Theodore on October 11, 1919. He received a patent on additional lands in December 1937. Benj. F. Boettler received a patent on adjoining land in section 3, 81.5 acres, on January 30, 1917. It does not state when he received a homestead exemption. Levi also homesteaded in this area. Our preliminary search of the land records does not show that Charles ever homesteaded near this area. It is possible that Charles and Effie came out for a visit and lost their child or that they were living with Charles' brothers at the time.

The original homestead and additional lands were kept in the family until 1952. At that time it was sold to Gilbert Kitchens. In 1959 Kitchens sold to James Thompson and in 1962 he sold to Arthur Hudspeth. Hudspeth sold the land to Energy Fuels in 1978 and today is under the ownership of Cyprus Western Coal company.

Some additional notes from Katherine Bowman: Charles was born Oct. 15, 1878. Levi did not come to this area until 1909. She has no knowledge of the grave location. Eddy was a small scattered community in the Trout Creek area. The homestead was on Fish Creek off from Trout Creek. The Eddy school house was located at the junction of RCR 29 and RCR 129.
