City/State of Birth: Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Current Residence: Denver, Colorado

Olympics and Events Attended:
1964 Olympics, Innsbruck, Austria – Ski Jumping Team Alternate

Brief Biography:
Card grew up in Steamboat Springs and it was here he earned his nickname “The Reckless Young Rider from Steamboat Springs” when he first put skis on in 1946. Card became the Rocky Mountain Division Downhill and Slalom Champion in his first class A competition in 1956. In 1957 Van had epiphysitis, a bone problem, but even wearing a brace didn’t stop him from becoming one of two Colorado skiers to place in the top ten in the 1957 Junior Nationals.

Card was disappointed that they did not select him to replace a jumper with a broken leg at the 1964 Olympics so he began teaching and was the Winter Sports Club Head Jumping Coach from 1964-1966. Card retired from skiing in 1970 and later became a building contractor in Denver, Colorado, where he lives with his wife Judy. He has three daughters.
