Brief Biography:

Demong began skiing at the age of 3 and racing at the age of 6. He moved to Steamboat in December of 1997 to compete in the Nordic Combined World Cup. It was his first experience at the highest level of competition and he was amazed at the level of hospitality and the quality of conditions that he encountered. Since then he has competed in over a hundred international events around the world. “Nowhere yet has matched the same enthusiasm and warmth with which Steamboat embraces the opportunity to host the highest-level athletes and competitions,” he says.

Demong thought his career was over when he fractured his skull in 2002. While goofing off in a swimming pool after a competition in Germany, Demong dived into the shallow end, hit the bottom and spent over a minute unconscious. The accident happened only eight months after he was airlifted off a jump in Slovakia following a face-first crash into the hill during training. After taking a year off to recover he also gained a new perspective on life and a new appreciation for the sport. Demong is looking forward to competing in his third Olympics in Turin, Italy in 2006.

While living in Steamboat he truly felt accepted and part of the community in part because of his role in the Nordic Combined Team. While he says that he loves the friendships he has made and the people he has met in Steamboat, he also enjoys the amazing fishing, hunting, skiing, and hiking amidst the awesome scenery in Routt County. Demong cherishes the rich quality of life in the Yampa Valley.
