Brief Biography: Heid began skiing at age three in Steamboat Springs. He competed in the junior nationals from 1951- 1955 and in 1960 he was alternate to the Olympic ski jumping team in Squaw Valley. From 1962-1965 he became University of Wyoming’s head ski coach. Following that, Heid was the Alpine Olympic training team guest coach in 1964 in Aspen, Colorado.
From 1964-1965, under a program established by The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Heid trained Mescalero Apache Indians to operate the Sierra Blanca ski area near Ruidoso, New Mexico where he was mountain manager. Since 1986, Ray has owned and managed Del’s Triangle 3 Ranch (started in 1962 by his brother Delbert) near Clark, Colorado where they breed and raise their own horses, train them and lead scenic rides and pack trips. Heid is a fourth generation Steamboat native.
