Brief Biography:

Mayer began skiing at the age of two and competing by the time he was six. In 1988 Mayer followed his older brothers’ lead and joined the Holiday Valley Freestyle Team in New York. For the next eight years his parents shuttled the clan seven to twelve hours each way to Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine to competitions. Mayer dominated his age class in the Northeast and nationally for those years.

After Mayer finished junior high it was decided by the family that, with his talent, Mayer needed a more productive atmosphere so he and his mother moved to Steamboat so that he could train year round while attending Lowell Whiteman School. In 1999, at the age of sixteen, Mayer became the youngest member of the U.S. Freestyle Ski team. Mayer took the gold in the dual moguls at the 2000 World Junior Championships, and the bronze in the dual moguls at the 2001 World Junior Championships. He was the moguls champion at the 2001-02 U.S. Ski Team Gold Cup, which earned him a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Mayer won the silver medal in moguls at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.
