The Toponas Community Club has served the small, unincorporated town of Toponas as a community center and meeting hall since its construction in circa 1924. The building represents the development and cultural heritage of the community located in South Routt County. The building is a visible and recognized feature of the small Toponas community and serves as a central meeting area and true community center. During the period of agricultural activity, the people of Toponas constructed the Toponas Community Center, circa 1924, through a community effort. The original building site was approximately one mile east of its current location, on Routt County Road 6 in section nine. In 1941, the building was divided into three pieces and moved on lettuce trucks to its current location in the center of Toponas at a cost of $3,000. The building was placed on a new foundation and has not changed in appearance since that time. Local historians assume that the community building was moved in conjunction with the relocation of the regional highway, which is now Highway 131.
The Toponas Community Club was constructed and built as a community center and still serves in that capacity. It is the center of social activity for the community. It is the only public meeting hall in the community and serves multiple uses. Throughout the community’s history, the building has served as a community center, schoolhouse, and gathering place for the area residents. The non-profit Toponas Community Club operates the building and frequently hosts public and private social events. The building has been the location of recent weddings, baby showers, church services, extension classes, club meetings, and community meetings. No public dances or alcohol are allowed on site. The building is the focal point of local activity and serves in a social capacity. The Toponas Community Center maintains the identity of the community.
