Steamboat's Over the Hill Gang
Mandall Pass Hike [Click here to view full size picture]

This is the home page for the Over the Hill Gang. It contains a set of links to our own pages on hiking, biking, skiing, etc., as well as to external pages. We would welcome suggestions of what you would like to see added.

How Did I Get Here? Many of you will have arrived at this page by going to www.ssoverthehillgang.org and wonder how you ended up on yampavalley.info. Yampavalley.info is a community oriented series of pages that is designed to provide information about organizations and activities in the Yampa Valley. They host our pages for free, and provide a simple means for us to update them. We suggest that you click on the "home" button on the bar above and explore all that they have to offer. Their pages are a valuable resource for everyone who lives in the valley.

How Do I Get Information on these Pages? These pages have been created by Dave Howell (David.Howell@uvm.edu) and Michael Lichtenstein (michaelute@comcast.net). We would be happy to add anything you want that has to do with the Over-the-Hill-Gang. Please write to either of us and we will create the necessary pages. (Please write rather than tell us verbally, because we both have bad memories.) Most of the pages that we have put up are intended as bare-bones pages, with the expectation that those more knowledgeable than us will help us flesh them out. Please help!

Hiking

Steamboat’s OTHG hikes this season will follow the same “leaderless” format as last season. A suggested hike sequence is listed below.

Suggested meeting times are included. The meeting place is the Safeway parking lot. All of the hikes are described in detail in the book Hiking the Boat II by Diane White-Crane.

Hikers should be prepared with a packed lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen and bug repellent. It is also a good idea to purchase a Colorado “Search and Rescue” card. This is available from several sources, including Straightline in downtown Steamboat Springs, and the U.S. Forest Service office.

Since the hikes are leaderless, they have been scheduled for Independence Day week for whoever would like to spend the holiday hiking. Hikes after Labor Day can be organized on an “ad hoc” basis by the group, depending on conditions.

(See schedule for 2007 in: "Outdoor activitys"

Biking

We need a leader for the Road Biking program. If you are willing to take on the job of coordinating these rides, please contact one of the Club Officers or the Newsletter Editor.

Mountain Biking – No information was provided to the Newsletter Editor, so perhaps it will be the same as last year.

There has been a suggestion to switch the Friday road rides to Wednesday and move the mountain bike on roads to Friday since dirt roads are less traveled than paved roads on Fridays and it might be a bit safer to ride on paved roads on Wednesdays.

North Routt

Diane White-Crane is seeking fellow OTHG members who might be interested in weekly cross-country ski and snowshoe trips up in North Routt (Clark). Days and times will be determined by interested parties. Terrain and distances will be easy to moderate. Call Diane at 879-3248.

OK, technically we’re not all “Seniors”, but it has been suggested that some of the numerous single members in our midst might enjoy activities that will enable them to get to know each other. If you would like to participate in or help organize activities for singles, please contact Diane White-Crane at 879-3248.

Travel Information Bank

Many of our members enjoy traveling to lots of different locations around the country and around the world. It has been suggested that we establish some sort of Travel Information Bank where members who have been to interesting places can post travel tips and information, and where members who want to travel to a particular place can request information on the area. This sounds like something that might be of use and interest to many of us. Unfortunately, your Newsletter Editor does not have sufficient computer knowledge or expertise to have any idea how to set this up. If anyone knows how this might be accomplished and could help with the project, please contact me.

News Items Wanted
If you have news items that may be of interest to The Gang, please send them to me for inclusion in the next newsletter. This is your newsletter, so please send me your input.

David Moulton

OTHG Newsletter Editor

BRIDGE

The plan is to set up a marathon type of bridge beginning in September
and running through May. It will be held in player's homes with 2
tables once a month. The Chicago scoring method will be used. The
cost is $15.00 per couple--$7.50 single. Do not worry if you aren't a
yearly resident--you will fit in when here. We hope to have a potluck
dinner with the money going to the top 3 winners in May. Please call
Jane Davis @870-8707 if interested

The Social Committee

The Social Committee is aiming to have a social activity the first week of each month. The activity will be, for the most part, held the first Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of each month as a means to give everyone the opportunity to attend at least some of the OTHG social activities should they have a conflict with a particular day of the week.

The Social Committee has decided that social activities hosted in a member's home or club house (e.g. a potluck dinner or cocktail party) will be limited to members only. These activities will not be published in the Steamboat Pilot and the OTHG president will include in his/her remarks at the monthly dinners a reminder of this policy.

Prospective members and guests are welcome to attend all other social functions as a means to become familiar with the OTHG, however prospective members and guests are encouraged to become a member of the OTHG rather than attend our activities on an ongoing basis without becoming a member.
