Yampa Valley Almanac Lore

The Community Agriculture Alliance is compiling a "Yampa Valley Almanac", which gathers local anecdotes, lore and information about our valley.

Below are some facts and tidbits from the Almanac...


  • By 1913, more cattle were shipped from Steamboat Springs than from any other single point in the United States. In those early days when cattle were shipped onto trains and sent to sale, the cattle's face would turn dark black from the train smoke going through tunnels.

I skied with an Olympian

So many kids that grow up in Steamboat Springs are part of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club that the club produces an amazing number of elite athletes. That makes it likely that if you grew up here, you probably got the chance to harrass your friend about being in the paper every week, or watch them compete in the Olympics, the X-Games or other world-class competitions.

Legend of the Sleeping Giant

The Sleeping Giant is located at the west end of Steamboat. He can clearly be seen at all times of the year. There are several different tales of how he came to be sleeping here.There are several versions of the Legend of Sleeping Giant but Rusty De Lucia, a long time local resident believes that the one told to her by Kingo (Charlotte Perry of Perry-Mansfield) as a young girl is the real one.
