Annually the North West Colorado Livestock, Horse and Dog Exposition is hosted by one of the seven NW Colorado Counties. Youth from Garfield, Rio Blanco, Moffat, Routt, Jackson, Grand, and Eagle Counties may participate.
The Northwest Colorado Livestock Expo was started in Grand County in 1967. It was started as an event for 4-H members from the 7 Northwestern Counties to have workshops and hands on teaching of techniques for preparing and showing their 4-H projects. 4-H members are allowed to bring only one animal and they must work with that animal. Parents are only to watch and help out in certain circumstances. The first Expos involved beef, sheep, and horses. In 1972 swine projects were added. A $100 scholarship was offered to the 4-H member that collected the most points for participating in the various activities of each specie. Later this was changed to a $100 savings bond. Also Northeastern Junior College offered scholarships and in different years there have been scholarships from C.S.U., C.N.C.C. and C.M.C.
Today the program teaches youth how to feed, show, about animal health, and the industry they participate in. Youth have the opportunity to bring Horse, Beef, Sheep, Goat, Swine, Poultry, Rabbit and Dog projects. The emphasis is not on blue ribbon livestock, rather the development of blue ribbon youth!! This year Expo is in Rifle, at the Garfield County Fairgrounds July 7-10, 2008. Registration now available.
