STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A blizzard of weather forecasters are expected to hit Steamboat Ski Area next week when the resort hosts a national conference for meteorologists.
"We invited meteorologists from throughout the nation to come to Steamboat for an educational conference," Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. spokeswoman Cathy Wiedemer said.
Twenty-five meteorologists, including weather anchors Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel, CNN's Jill Brown and Denver's Jennifer Zeppelin from Channel 4, are coming to Steamboat this weekend to attend the 13th Annual Weather Summit, which officially starts Sunday.
While attending seminars, which will focus on topics including how weather impacts wildfire and hurricane reporting, 16 weather anchors will use ski corp.'s satellite hook up to broadcast live weather forecasts from Steamboat. Most of the meteorologists will do their normal regional weather report for their affiliate but from Steamboat Springs with Headwall ski run in the background.
"Obviously, you can see it's incredible exposure for us," Wiedemer said.
Neal Frank, who is featured on a Houston news program, already has made remote weather reports from Steamboat Springs this week, she said.
In all, between 80 and 100 live shots of Steamboat Ski Area will broadcast all over the United States by the time the summit closes on Jan. 26.
Ski corp.'s videographer Tom Baer is the cameraman for the broadcasts, which are staged near the Sheraton Steamboat Resort's swimming pool.
"It's kind of a riot," Wiedemer admitted.
Many times tourists will recognize one of the meteorologists from their home state's news channel.
